An American soldier was killed this week during a successful mission to rescue hostages held by the terrorist caliphate called Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (also referred to as Islamic State, ISIS, ISIL, IS, Daesh and D’aesh). The death marks the first of a U.S. soldier fighting ISIS, and is the first U.S. combat fatality in Iraq since 2011.

President Obama Wednesday announced that the U.S. is deploying up to 300 military personnel to Cameroon for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance operations against the militant Boko Haram terrorist group. In making the announcement the White House emphasized that personnel would not take part in combat operations and would be armed only for self-defense.

A verdict has been reached in Iran’s espionage case against Washington Post reporter Jason Rezaian, though the reclusive nation failed to offer information about what exactly the verdict is and whether a sentence had been handed down. The U.S. Presidential election is more than a year away, and yet the media has all but narrowed down the number of potential candidates to a dozen Republicans and a small handful of Democrats. As it stands today the Republican field is being led by a bombastic, P.T. Barnum-wanna-be style billionaire, who, it must be admitted, is mildly amusing. Leading the Democratic side is a career politician who has been pining for the White House since she was evicted from it in 1998.
